Measuring approx. 6.7mm wide, set with an Amethyst (2.3mm), Diamond (0.07ct.), Opal (3.4x2.5mm), Ruby (2.5mm), and Emerald (2.3mm), spelling out ADORE with the first letter of each stone name, fashioned in 18k yellow gold. Size 6 1/2. Circa 1800.

Jean-Baptiste Mellerio (1765-1850), jewelry designer to Marie Antoinette and the French court, is credited with inventing acrostic jewelry, poetically called the ā€œlanguage of gemstones.ā€ NapolĆ©on BonaparteĀ commissioned some of the best known acrostic jewels, including a set of bracelets for Josephine that spelled out her daughter's name.
